Why we are introducing Transitional Benefits

Watch Transitional Benefits part 2

It is now some months since the Government responded to the crisis caused by the change made by the previous Lord Chancellor to the discount rate (the factor used to calculate the size of damages in personal injury cases) by saying that "the Department of Health will work closely with General Practitioners (GPs) and Medical Defence Organisations to ensure that appropriate funding is available to meet additional costs to GPs, recognising the crucial role they play in the delivery of NHS care."

As a result of the announcements by the English and Welsh Governments about the development of a state-backed indemnity scheme for general practice in England and Wales, when you renew your MDU membership, or join the MDU, your benefits will move to Transitional Benefits. These benefits are intended to provide the indemnity you need until a state-backed scheme is introduced.

By offering Transitional Benefits we are able to give GP members a saving of approximately half their subscription for work under an NHS primary care contract in England or Wales.
