What is affiliate membership?

Affiliate membership is a new form of MDU membership designed specifically for GPSTs working in England. If offers a valuable package of benefits, excluding indemnity for claims/medico-legal advice, and is free.

Who can become an affiliate member of the MDU?

Any GPST working/training in England can have affiliate membership.

If you are currently part of a deanery scheme with the MDU you will automatically be moved onto affiliate membership from 6 August 2021. You don't need to do anything.

If you are a GPST working in England who isn't currently on a deanery scheme, please complete this short survey and we will invite you to move onto affiliate membership.

What if I'm not working as a GPST anymore?

Please let our membership team know what you are doing so we can discuss your indemnity needs and explore suitable membership options to suit you.

Are affiliate members indemnified for claims/medico-legal advice?

No. Affiliate members do not receive indemnity for claims/medico-legal advice and will need to speak to their LETB to find out who their claims provider is and how to report a claim to them/seek medico-legal advice.

If I am an MDU affiliate member, but also have claims support with another provider through my LETB, does that mean I am dual indemnified?

No. This is because MDU affiliate membership does not include indemnity for claims.

Can I have MDU indemnity for claims included in my affiliate membership?

No, affiliate membership is free and does not include indemnity for claims.

When can I have full MDU membership?

Once your training is complete and you are about to move into your first GP role, we will send your renewal documents for your first year as a GP. Don't forget to update us with your CCT date and what you will be doing for your first post.

Does this include cover for GMC referrals, criminal investigations, good samaritans act etc?

No. Affiliate members do not receive indemnity for claims or medico-legal advice and will need to speak to their LETB to find out who their claims provider is and how to report a claim to them/seek medico-legal advice.

If I don't want affiliate membership, how do I cancel?

If you don't want to take advantage of free affiliate membership, simply contact our membership team to let them know.
