Assessing capacity

e-learning

Mental capacity is a vast subject and can often cause confusion amongst clinicians. This short e-learning course covers the legal test for capacity, and outlines how this can be applied using fictional scenarios based on common dilemmas doctors face when assessing capacity.

The legislation and case law applies to England and Wales, but many of the practical points covered are more widely applicable to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

This module covers:

  • the two stage test for capacity
  • how to approach a capacity assessment
  • common dilemmas that arise in capacity assessments including, when a patient won't engage with the assessment, or when you're asked to assess capacity for decisions outside your area of expertise such as complex financial decisions.

Estimated completion time is 20 minutes.

You don't need to finish the course all at once – you can save your progress and pick up where you left off whenever it's convenient.

Once you finish the course you'll be able to download a certificate of completion.
