MDU response to PAC clinical negligence inquiry

Following the announcement of the Public Accounts Committee inquiry into the costs of clinical negligence, Thomas Reynolds, Director of Policy and Communications at the MDU, said:

"The MDU welcomes the Public Accounts Committee’s renewed scrutiny on the cost of clinical negligence, and particularly the soaring legal fees associated with these claims. We look forward to submitting evidence to the inquiry and making the case for a package of reforms to tackle our fundamentally flawed clinical negligence system.

"The MDU has been sounding the alarm for years about these unsustainable costs. The latest figures for clinical negligence stand at over £2.8 billion; an eye-watering amount of money leaving the system.

"From implementing a system of fixed recoverable costs for lower value claims, to repealing outdated legislation that disregards the existence of the NHS when calculating compensation, there are already ideas on the table that could swiftly address these issues and return a chunk of money to the public purse."
