Join the UK’s leading medical defence organisation for an inspiring day of expert insights and interactive sessions on Thursday 30 April at The Midland Hotel in Manchester. Created exclusively for international medical graduates (IMGs), this full-day conference will help you build a supportive professional network and successfully adapt to working in the UK.

Who should attend?

Internationally qualified doctors, either already established or new to working in the UK, who are looking for guidance and advice on ways to navigate UK practice. All grades and specialities are welcome.

Starting a new job in the UK or taking the next step in your career can be a challenging experience for IMGs. The IMG conference will build your confidence, advance your career and help you thrive in UK practice. On the day, you will:

  • learn practical advice for succeeding in the NHS, with actionable tools to help you navigate UK medical practice and culture.
  • take a deep dive into key medico-legal cases and topics, such as dealing with conflict.
  • hear from established international doctors with practical and real-world experience living and working as IMGs, who have built successful careers in the UK.

Consultant vascular surgeon

Ashok Handa is Professor of Vascular Surgery at Oxford University and Honorary Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital. He is Director of the Collaborating Centre for values-based practice in Health and Social Care based at St Catherine’s College, Oxford.

Professor Peter Brennan OBE

Professor Peter Brennan OBE

Consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon

Professor Peter Brennan is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at PHUT, specialising in head and neck cancer, with a personal chair in Surgery for his research and education achievements. He has over 890 publications, with more than 100 of these on patient safety, team working and human factors (HF). He is a committed trainer and educator. Peter won the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) 2022 Silver Scalpel Award – the most prestigious accolade for training excellence across all 10 UK surgical specialties. 

Dr Udvitha Nandasoma

Dr Udvitha Nandasoma

MDU head of advisory services

Dr Nandasoma joined the MDU as a medico-legal adviser in 2008 after completing specialist training in gastroenterology. He became head of advisory services in 2022 and was a practising hepatologist until early 2023.

Dr Ibrahim Ivan

Dr Ibrahim Ivan

Co-founder, Road to UK

Dr Ivan's journey from Bangladesh to the UK was filled with uncertainty and challenges, culminating in creating a blog that became a lifeline for international medical graduates aspiring to work in the UK. With years of NHS experience and a postgraduate certificate in medical education, he is a leader in supporting IMG integration within the NHS and has served as a differential attainment fellow for Health Education England, South West, working towards a fairer environment for doctors in training.

Dr Ibreez Ajaz

Dr Ibreez Ajaz

Co-founder, Road to UK

From attending medical school in Bangladesh – a country unfamiliar to her in both language and culture – to advancing her medical career in the UK, Dr Ajaz has been dedicated to fostering equality, diversity, and inclusivity. In 2021, this earned her the Peninsula School of Medicine Trainee of the Year award. As the co-founder of Road to UK, she advocates for the wellbeing of international medical graduates within the NHS.
