If you're moving to the UK or New Zealand, you'll need to ensure you have adequate professional medical indemnity in place. NZMII (New Zealand Medical Indemnity Insurance) is a New Zealand-owned insurance company providing medical malpractice and liability cover for healthcare professionals.
The MDU has an arrangement with NZMII where doctors moving to or from either country may be able to access complimentary membership for up to two years.
Complimentary MDU membership is available for certain NZMII members who are working solely in a UK NHS hospital below consultant level, where indemnity for clinical negligence claims is provided by a state indemnity scheme (such as Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts).
It is not available for consultants, or for those undertaking work where indemnity for clinical negligence claims is not provided.
If you are not eligible for complimentary membership, you can still apply for paid membership. Get a quote and apply for membership.
Complimentary NZMII membership is available for certain MDU members going to work in New Zealand as an RMO (Resident Medical Officer) employed by a Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora hospital, and who are signed up to the NZMII Group Scheme.
It is not available for members who undertake private work outside of a Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora hospital, as this work is not eligible for the NZMII Group Scheme and hence reciprocal indemnity with the MDU will not apply.
Eligible healthcare professionals will continue to be members of the MDU and membership of NZMII will be provided at no extra cost.
If you are a GPEP/Private or Locum RMO and not eligible for the Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora NZMII Group Scheme, you can still pay for NZMII personal medical indemnity cover. Find out more by visiting the NZMII website and apply for membership.
