MDU responds to NHS Resolutions annual report

In response to NHS Resolution’s annual report for 2024, Thomas Reynolds, Director of Policy and Communications at the Medical Defence Union, said:

"It is extremely concerning that the costs being paid out in clinical negligence claims continue to rise and now stand at more than £3 billion.

"Action must be taken to reverse this trend and ensure we are keeping as much money in the NHS as possible, where it can be used to improve patient care, support recruitment and retention, and provide better facilities for our NHS workforce.

"The MDU has long made the case for reform. The laws and regulations governing clinical negligence are woefully out of date and the resulting costs place further pressures on our NHS and the staff working within it.

"The government has committed to a review of clinical negligence as part of the NHS Ten Year Health Plan. These latest figures make it clear that reform cannot be put off any longer."
